| JEAN-PIERRE AND LUC DARDENNE, GUESTS OF HONOUR OF EUROPE DAY
On May 23rd, the Festival de Cannes teamed up with the European Commission for the 4th Europe Day. Invited by Viviane Reding, the European Commissioner for Information, Society and Media, and Gilles Jacob, President of the Festival de Cannes, the European Ministers for Culture and film industry professionals met to discuss the theme: "European Films Go Global". The aim was to improve distribution and profits of European films outside of Europe.
Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, directors, screenplay writers and producers of intimate yet politically committed films ("The Child", Palme d'Or 2005, "The Promise", "The Son" - best actor prize 2002 - "Rosetta" - Palme d'Or and best actress prize 1999), have accepted to be the mentors of this event, which aims to support the development of European films. Viviane Reding and the ministers presented the conclusions of the discussion to the press on May 23rd during a press conference that was held at 12:30pm in the Espace Ambassadeurs, Palais des Festivals.
n Monday May 22nd, Viviane Reding, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, French Minister of Culture, Giles Jacob and the European Ministers of Culture climbed the steps to the Palais together for the screening of the Italian film "Il Caïmano" by Nanni Moretti, which was in the official selection of the Festival. |
