Globo TV is the largest producer of dramaturgy in the world. Its telenovelas, movies, and series became important products in many countries spanning the planet. Miracle Screenings asked Globo TV about its new productions.

Can you tell us about your sales to European countries? What are the most important titles that you sold to European countries in 2006?

In 2006, we sold our productions to several countries, such as Israel, Bulgaria, Albania and Portugal among others. We don't have one most important title, because all of them have different approaches to different audiences. Our productions are a key tool to the programming grid and our clients can choose in our portfolio the best option to their necessities, taking into consideration the story line, the audience and the slot.

Little Missy

Do you currently have programs on the air in European countries?

In 2006 alone, 44,000 hours of programming were sold to more than 70 countries, reaching an average audience of 100 million viewers every day. We can highlight some examples in Europe : in Albania, the Top Channel exhibits the telenovelas America and will premiere Belissima in March. "Soul Mate" airs on the channel Domashniy in Russia, which will also soon exhibit Belissima. In Portugal, SIC is now exhibiting Pages of Life with huge success. The telenovelas is among the top 10 programs in the country since its launching, with an average share of 39%. Besides Pages of Life, SIC has three more telenovelas from Globo TV on the air. Globo TV International will launch Pages of Life for the international market during MIPTV 2007, together with productions: Little Missy (International Emmy Nominee 2006 for Best Drama category), Like a Wave and Snakes & Lizards.

We know that Globo TV is the largest producer of dramaturgy in the world. Can you tell us about your production facilities?

For more than 30 years, Globo TV International has been distributing programs to more than 130 countries. Combining high quality with a surprising volume, TV Globo is a rarity in that it is a programmer - the largest TV broadcaster in Brazil and an audience leader - at the same time, world renowned as a producer, listed in the 2005 and 2006 Guinness Books as the largest producer of dramaturgy in the world. Each year, around 2,500 hours of programming, the equivalent of more than 1,200 full-length features, are produced in the largest studio complex in Latin America, which covers 1.65 million square meters in Rio de Janeiro. Inaugurated in October 1995, the studios concentrate the production of all programs, with infrastructure, technology and production processes capable of producing, continually and simultaneously, dramaturgy, shows and live broadcasts. Its installed capacity includes, among other resources: 1,65 million m2; 156.000 m2 of constructed area; 3 areas for scenographic cities totaling 160.000 m2 ; 10 acoustically treated studios, totaling an area of 8.000 m2 and boasting the most advanced lighting resources in the world; 1 special effects production center (gunshots/explosions/models/etc.); Optic fiber and digital microwave interconnection with Globo Rio. Besides the resources listed above, the following facilities are also available: 1 stage set and scenographic city factory with a monthly productivity of 3.186 m2 of sets, and 1.100m2 of scenographic cities. 1 accessory and wardrobe collection with 39.407 accessories and 58.500 wardrobe pieces, all computers cataloged and registered; Set props, com 37 thousand computer cataloged and registered items; 1 wardrobe factory with a monthly productivity of 1.725 pieces of clothing; 1 power generation station, with 5MW installed capacity. Globo's Production Center, with its commitment to maintain the Globo Standard of Quality, possesses a totally digital theme park, which is translated into quality programs for our viewers. Besides productions for conventional TV, it can produce for HDTV and digital cinema, bringing benefits to the television and movie industries. Globo's Production Center project was built with special awareness for the environment. 600.000 m2 of Atlantic Rainforest have been preserved, it has its own sewage treatment station, intelligent use of water and the least aggressive cooling system. The whole complex is self-sufficient in terms of power and possesses a gas generation system, producing enough power to service a city of 75,000 inhabitants.

What new titles will you bring to MIPTV 2007?

We are taking four new telenovelas to MIPTV 2007. "Pages of Life" is a story from the same author of the international successes Family Ties and Women in Love, Pages of Life is a contemporary story that deals with family relations and love in a light, yet extremely real manner. The drama addresses important social issues such as Downs Syndrome and alcoholism. The telenovelas includes scenes shot in Amsterdam and African nations, including Burundi and Kenya. "Little Missy" is about a fine gentleman, slaves, conflicts and romance, whom all complete Little Missy. It is the story of the forbidden love between Little Missy (Débora Falabella) and the attorney Rodolfo (Danton Mello), intermingled with the political disputes taking place in the period leading up to the abolition of slavery in the second half of the nineteenth century. This telenovelas was nominated for an International Emmy 2006. "Snakes & Lizards" is a modern approach to this comedy that discusses the ever-increasing distance between two worlds: one that preserves principles such as loyalty and friendship, and another where the power of money is the only thing that matters. "Like a Wave" is a story about a native from Azores, Daniel crosses the Atlantic Ocean, running away from Portugal.  He is to find a safe haven and the love of his life on a paradisiacal island in Brazil, the background against which this story filled with romance, suspense and action.
