What are your acquisition strategies?
We acquire distinctive series to complement our own excellent home grown dramas. Acquisitions are used on the BBC to add a different flavor into the schedule from our own British produced programming.

Damages
On BBC One, we are currently showing the complex thriller Damages with Glenn Close and Ted Danson and in the summer will run a new season of Medium which is very popular. On BBC Two we broadcast the biggest US hit Heroes and the Tudors both of which have been extremely successful on the channel. We also show Heroes on BBC Three along with Family Guy which are well received by a younger audience. On BBC Four we have just started transmitting Mad Men which is form the creator of the Sopranos Matthew Weiner. This has been a big hit on BBC Four and is a wonderful drama series set in the advertising industry of Madison Avenue in the early 1960's. Later this year we will be playing the second series of the French thriller Ecrinage (Spiral) which did well for us last year
We are always on the lookout for something "new" in drama and comedy - something with a different twist and a fresh feel - not the same old formula stuff. Although many of the series we acquire are in English BBC Four gives us the opportunity to show foreign language series as well and we are always on the search for interesting things form Europe and further a field.
Our Key acquisition deals last year were for the above mentioned shows, particularity "Heroes" and "Mad Men" which are real Channel transforming programs but we are extremely pleased with all of the series we run. |
