What are your acquisition strategies?

As for documentaries, we look for high quality works with strong messages. It is preferable to have new or exclusive information for our Japanese viewers. It is also important that the theme of the documentary is on something that is currently going on in the world. We also try to introduce works done by Asian productions and producers as much as possible. For dramas, as a public broadcaster we look for programs that can reach a wide range of audience. However, at the same time we do not want to limit ourselves to any particular genres of dramas. We pay much attention first to dramas successful in the countries where they have been aired. For animation products, we try to look for something that is different from Japanese animation but still entertaining for Japanese kids to watch.

Monk (NBC Universal)

What genres are you looking for?

We look for documentary, drama, and animation. For documentaries, mostly current affairs on our "World Documentary" slot, and wildlife and history docs for our Educational channel. We also acquire dramas from the US, UK, Korea etc.

Can you give us several titles of domestic and international products that you acquired this year?

Documetaries:
"Hold Me Tight, Let Me Go" (Films of Record/UK)
"Diamond Road" (Kensington Communications/Canada)
"The Future of Water" (Panopticon/Norway)
"The Cell" (Point du Jour/France)
"Nuclear Secrets" (BBCWW/UK)
"Bush's War" (WBGH/USA)
"Somalia Warlords Next Door" (Channel 4/UK)
"World According to Gazprom" (CAPA/France)
"Yellow Sand" (CCTV/China)

Dramas: As far as dramas are concerned, the series we have bought are mostly from the U.S. for the past year, we acquired "Damages", "Ugly Betty", "ER", "Monk", "Desperate Housewives" and so on.

How many hours of programming will you acquire this year?

We will acquire about 150 hours of documentaries, and around 400 hours of dramas.

Products from what countries are important for you?

We look at all countries and products equally for purchase so there isn't any particular country that is more/less important.
